rhipsalis elliptica is an epiphytic cactus (“growing on trees”), native to brazil. its producing oblong to elliptic, flat and broad joints.
care
rhipsalis elliptica does best on a bright to light shaded place with some morning and/or evening sun. during summer it can be placed sun protected in the garden or on the balcony. it needs room temperature throughout the year with a winter minium of 15 °c (59 °f). if placed too cold the leaves can turn into red.
the soil should be well drained, i use a mix between humus, sand, crushed rocks and a part of orchid soil. there are special mixes for epiphytic cactus available.
keep it moist but not wet and allow to dry between the waterings. water running out of the pot’s hole should be removed after a few minutes. sitting in water can cause root damage. if placed a bit colder during winter it needs less watering.
a half concentrated cactus fertilizer can be given monthly and every six to eight weeks during spring/winter.
propagation
rhipsalis elliptica can be propagated by seeds or cuttings.
